MY NEW RIDE

Before moving to Beijing, I owned a phatty Volvo S40 LSE. It sounds like a soccer mom ride, but that machine served me well. Sometimes M, friends and coworkers would take funny swipes at the ride (Examples: 'Aren't you late for your PTA meeting?' Or, 'The Vassar Professors Mixer is on tonight, right?'). However when it came to get-togethers, moving parties or Ikea runs, my Volvo was always at the center of the action.

Now I have a folding bicycle. It's a funny looking machine, especially when you're competing against the unicycle-sized monsters some Beijingers have. But you really can't beat the portability and the size. I'm looking to pimp it like a Scion: buy a heavy-duty bell, a basket for my back, some Boondocks stickers and maybe an extra gear or two. Where's the Chinese version of Xhibit (host of MTV's 'Pimp My Ride') ?

The orange bike in the background is M's version of the bike. It's fun watching the locals watch us fly by. A wink or two gets them cracking. *end*
